What makes the sound of a Harley only?
I hear the Harley engine has a patent on the sound. How can that be? What is the technology behind the sound?
The cylinders fire at about the same time. In a typical two-cylinder, designers would have the fire on the cylinder 180 degrees out of phase with each other for smoother power. In a Harley, the fire is much closer (closer to the same time) and sound more like a double ignition single cylinder engines. If you listen carefully, you can listen twice as fire after a long pause before the next. This creates a louder sound than other motorcycle engines.
