It was a day in the history of American automobile culture in 1902 when two young friends left their stable jobs at an engineering company Milwaukee to embark on an undertaking irrevocably the course of motorcycle history forever.
This was the day that William S Harley and Arthur Davidson designed and built the first single cylinder (400cc) the right of a shed in the backyard of Davidson.
Even though the first engine was reliable, that expanded because it was underpowered. The initial framework was too weak to hold the new engine so it was replaced by a stronger structure, more substantial that was built similar to the prototype. In 1903 there were two motorcycles and three more the following year. In 1907, Harley Davidson's growing reputation for reliable product helped boost its annual production to over 150. The year was also Harley Davidson, 1907, when he decided it was time to raise funds for expansion. They became in a divided society and action among employees of seventeen. They moved themselves out of the craft and Davidson in a much larger premise that remains location – Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee.
The first models of Harley-Davidson had no lights and no suspension. Within a few years after production had started before Harley forks installed main link magneto ignition and a carbide gas lamp. Model 5 produced in 1909 was about 4bhp from the entrance of its more than 494cc engine exhaust, with a speed of 45 mph. Bicycle Petals is used to start the engine. Once the bike was in motion the leather belt was reinforced by a hand lever. (For a more contemporary parts of what now appears to Harley Davidson, please visit our website).
The first V-Twin Harley was built in 1909. It was the 5D, but it was an immediate success. The V-Twin produced about 7bhp, which was almost twice that of a single engine, but it was hard to start and suffered from a belt slip. Two years later, in 1911, was filed on 45-degree V-twin with a revised valve apparatus, a new framework and had been fitted with a fully floating seat and chain drive. These new enhancements made a huge difference that caused the popularity of V-Twin to grow. In 1913 the 1000cc model 9E power plant was producing 10bhp which gave the bike a top speed 60 mph.
Harley-Davidson has initially been reluctant to participate themselves in careers such as reliability runs but changed their minds in 1914 and entered in a factory team. Of the crew of the Milwaukee firm, the Wrecking Crew Rode 8 powerful V-twin engine that were very competitive against rival Merkel and Excelsior, and India. This became a great period of Harley-Davidson, as production rose to more than 22,000 motorcycles and 16,000 sidecar in 1919. These numbers was halved in the next 2 years due mainly to the Ford Model T, which as most of the U.S. motorcycle companies outside business.
Harley-Davidson is known for its large capacity V-twin, but smaller 45ci Forty-five played a vital role in the history of company. The forty-five, produced in 1928 was the first machine with a total loss of oil. It was remodeled and updated 9 years after creating the series W. It was simple and strong Of forty-five Harley-Davidson that remained in business through the Depression of the 1930s. The WLA model proved to be a military machine useful in which about 80,000 were being used in WWII. These "war cycle" were converted for civilian use after the war had completed, which helped popularize worldwide Harley-Davidson.
In 1936, while still suffering the effects of depression, the Harley-Davidson 61E model. This 61cc model V-Twin engine was an enormous advance over other models because of their design overhead valve and oil recirculation system. Pure style helped 61E of becoming a great success. He became known as empty-headed, because of the shape of the engine rocker covers. He was given a technical advantage over its rival India and became the ancestor of modern Harley.
Harley-Davidson will always be synonymous with producing great bikes. What began as a dream, survived the Depression, and still going strong today. There's nothing like the sound of a Harley as you're heading for the road.
