Born in 1901 in Blackpool, England Bill Lyons was a motorcycle lover from an early age. At the time he was 18, owned his own platform – A "ray of sunshine in an oil bath, but coveted Harley Davidson and Superior District (the Cadillac of British cycles).
Lyons spoke artistic flair, with an eye for design. So when her new neighbor, William Walmsley, began building stylish sidecar called the Swallow, Lyon bought one for its new Norton. But Lyons was also a visionary. Convinced that the Swallow had a real market potential, Lyon Walmsley persuaded to go into business with him. In 1922, as Lyons turned 21, the two men borrowed some money from their parents and formed the Swallow Sidecar Company.
In Lyon we had anticipated, the Swallow Sidecar became highly sought after and his business prospered. In the mid-'20s began to build his own car. At first it was designed coaches and adapt to an Austin chassis and engine. They were an immediate success. So great was the demand that the boys Blackpool had to move to a larger headquarters in the region central England.
Lyon still not satisfied. He felt his creativity was hampered by having to work with the chassis and engine from another manufacturer. Thus who designed a chassis and outsourcing of production to Rubery Owen Artworks. He adapted this to the Standard Motor Company added 16 and his body. The result was the SS1, followed by SS-2. Although both were highly successful and the company continued to prosper, Lyon was not a man to wallow in good fortune.
He planned a new line of automobiles, SS Jaguars. This began with the introduction of the Jaguar SS 100 in 1936. Lyon also wanted an engine that could outperform the Standard 16. When Harry Westlake suggested that an engine that works best if the valves were up instead of on the side, Lyon was hired. The design modification further increase in power of 33.3 hp.
The demand for vehicles stopped and Lyons, unlike many others, his business survived the Great Depression with success. The company took a short vacation in vehicle production from 1939 to 1945 to contribute to the defense effort.
After the First World War 2, Lyon, continued to design luxury cars and sports cars of all who found an eager market. Lyon was considered ahead of its time in design. But There was more. At a time when most automakers focusing on the basic units that transport, Lyons had gone beyond the Transport and appealed to the psychological aspects of car ownership – fun and ego. Other automakers do not start capitalizing up later in the century.
This may or may not have been intentional. Lyon may have subconsciously transferred from the elements of its adherence to the principles of the motorcycle design of the car. But for some reason, the Jag personality. Have been described as "flexible", "elegant" and "sexy", and were adorned with an emblem of the Pharaoh of the jungle.
Lyons had supervised the design of each model the company produced. Driving force behind the company prospered. Lyons Once retired, the company went into decline. The Jaguars again were not as attractive as those designed by Lyon. The ownership of the company became British Leyland and then Ford Motor Company. Ford recently sold to Tata of India.
