Shooting for success on eBay Motors!
Last year over 300,000 vehicles were sold on eBay...
Millions of people look at eBay daily. According to a recent JD Power Survey, at least half of the people looking to buy a used car do at least part of their shopping and information gathering online. There are over 500 categories of vehicles at eBay Motors to choose from, making it easier and faster for buyers to find your listing. An average of eight people check out, or hit, any used car advertised on line. When someone checks out your ad it's also known as a hit. When you advertise in classifieds you have to deal with strangers coming to your home to look at your car. Online, all communications are via email and phone. Sellers and buyers alike are flocking to EBay Motors to check it out. Ebay Motors offers a variety of tools and protections to make such things go smoothly and safely. Click here to see the eBay Motors overview. EBay Motors is the only market place where buyers can research, bid, buy, finance, insure, and ship their "new" vehicle all from one site.
As with any purchase online, you should make sure you do some "homework" and are getting what you pay for. The first place we recommend looking is on eBay Motors. This way you can see how similiar vehicles are selling on eBay. Our Sell-It Price Finder tool for sellers helps with this research. Another source people often check is the Kelly Blue Book listing. This will give you pricing for age and condition of vehicle and is a trusted resource for used vehicles. Some people also use Edmunds. They are an on-line source for vehicle information, specs, and reviews.
Different states require different kinds of air pollution devices. In California, you need the "highest" level available and you should make sure your car is ready to pass the "smog test." For buyers peace-of-mind, eBay starts out by providing a built-in one month/1000-mile Short Term Service Agreement from the AON Warranty Group. The warranty terms can be seen by all parties so there will be no surprises. Click here for warranty details.
Some sellers offer their own warranties or the remainder of factory warranties. READ THE ADS CAREFULLY. Without being able to go see the vehicle yourself, vehicle inspections are one way that you can ask a third party to provide their opinion of the car. For an additional price, eBay offers sellers professional vehicle inspections through SGS Automotive and Pep Boys. Sellers use these companies to offer a kind of third-party "advice" to buyers. Both are recommended and supported by eBay and will provide the report on-line. Although convenient for the seller, SGS Automotive, however, does not appear to put the car "up on a rack." Pep Boys will put the car up, take the tires off, and offers the seller some discounts from the page link above.
Another thing buyers should check is the vehicle's history provided by tracking the Vehicle Information Number (VIN) found on the dash of all automobiles. This number provides valuable history of the vehicle including major accidents, salvage information, etc. Reports can be ordered from
Carfax and AutoCheck.com. These reports could be the most valuable piece of history you can get on a car, and well worth the cost. Another car history resource is NadaGuides.
eBay allows sellers to collect a deposit for a vehicle purchase through Paypal. This allows for a fast and convenient method for a seller to receive their deposit from a serious buyer. If you don't already have a Paypal account, you should get one. Click here to go to Paypal.com and register.
EBay now provides buyers with free Vehicle Purchase Protection. While the vast majority of vehicle transactions on eBay Motors go smoothly, Vehicle Purchase Protection protects buyers against the few cases of fraud and material vehicle misrepresentation that do occur. Coverage maximum is the vehicle purchase price, up to $20,000, with a $100 buyer co-pay. This program is provided for FREE on all eligible eBay Motors passenger vehicle transactions. Click here to see the Vehicle Purchase Protection terms and conditions and to verify eligibility.
Different sellers offer the terms of buying the car differently, so READ THE ADS CAREFULLY. Some sellers offer the vehicle for a certain final auction amount, while some offer monthly payments and financing. Generally the eBay transaction involves a deposit and agreement to purchase. If you need a loan, loans are available from various lenders. First, eBay offers financing options of their own. Click here for the eBay Financing Center. Or, you can apply to get a loan through one of the various loan companies such as eLoan or Capital One Auto Financing.
In order to help get a loan or to help determine loan terms, you may need to know your credit score. You can get that from various companies including
Equifax's Score Power and Reliacredit.com's 3-in-1 Credit Report.
It is typical that buyers who buy from dealers go to the dealer to complete the transaction because PayPal does not handle transactions of that size. So, keep that in mind when locating your car. But, on lower priced cars or on private-owner sales, you may be able to complete the transactions by phone/mail. Then, once you buy your car, you may need to get it home. EBay offers links to auto shipping services such as
Dependable Auto Shippers (DAS) and Movecars.com.
Happy eBaying!
